Discover the Wonderful Benefits of Green Tea for Hair

Green tea has always been my beverage of choice as a soothing and comforting brew. Its antioxidant properties, along with vitamins, minerals and other health benefits are of common knowledge. Regarding hair, however, it is often overlooked. Let’s dive into the wonderful world of green tea and uncover its secrets for healthy strong hair.

What’s in it?

As previously mentioned, green tea is rich with nourishing components. It contains antioxidants, such as catechins and flavonoids, which promote scalp health. Also present are vitamins E, C and B along with zinc and manganese. All of which are essential in generating healthy hair. Green tea contains moderate levels of caffeine. There are studies indicating that caffeine has a stimulating effect on hair follicles.

What Does Green Tea do for Hair?

This nourishing brew contains panthenol (vitamin B), a humectant and emollient. Moisture is drawn in, keeping strands supple and hydrated.  It also seals the hair cuticles, preventing split ends and frizzy hair. The antioxidants, particularly EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) supports hair growth and may help with hair loss/excessive hair shedding. They minimize free radicals in the scalp which are detrimental to growth and scalp health.  Combined with the caffeine content, blood circulation and stimulation are encouraged.

Teas also contain a plant compound called tannins. Tannins have antibacterial properties and help ease inflammation. Thus, promoting a healthy foundation for the scalp and its follicles. Dandruff is kept at bay and sebum production is balanced. They also coat the hair strands, providing strength and breakage is kept at a minimum.

How to Use on Hair

The simplest method of incorporating green tea into your hair care routine is with a tea rinse. Boil water and brew a green tea bag in a cup for 5 minutes. Cool and pour in a spray bottle. Apply to clean damp hair and scalp for 30 minutes then rinse out. You may apply daily if your locks tend to be on the dry side. Just be sure to seal it in with an oil.

If you’re looking to enhance your hair regimen, do try a green tea rinse. This has become my personal favorite and I use it with every hair wash. Give your tresses some TLC and brew this amazing elixir for yourself.
